Review: Hallyucon

On October 27th, the fourth edition of Hallyucon took place in the Evoluon, Eindhoven. We had a chance to experience a convention that was completely focussed on Korea, since it’s gaining more and more popularity through Kpop these days.

Hallyucon started in 2014, with their first edition being held in Amsterdam. Natasja van Knippenberg is one of the organisators and sat down with us to tell us a little more about this convention. They have a small team, who work as volunteers and next to their job to make Hallyucon a success. The original idea came from the Japanese conventions, that are occasionally held and always attract a lot of people. Since there is a large Kpop community in the Netherlands, they wondered why there wasn’t anything organised on Korea. Thus, they set up a foundation and kicked off with Hallyucon, which has proven to be a success ever since.

Natasja is no stranger to Korea either; She works for Samsung and occasionally travels to South Korea and even studied there. This comes in hand when you visit one of the few lectures they have, on travelling to Korea or the alcohol tasting workshop for example. There’s a difference between visiting South Korea as a tourist, or work related and it’s fun to learn about these differences. They also talked about studying or working abroad, their personal experiences. It’s definitely a good start to visit these lectures, if you are interested in studying abroad, or to visit South Korea in the future.

Other lectures and workshops that you could visit were a makeup workshop, a lotus and paper hanbok folding workshop, and a singing and dancing workshop. You can find a bigger version of their schedule HERE  Next to those things, they also had a few challenges. Such as the random play dance and 2x speed dance, both which are insanely popular amongst Kpop fans. This was definitely the place to show off your dance skills. They also had a Kpop party held in the basement, and the talent show which took place after the lectures and workshops.

Even though Hallyucon doesn’t want to focus on only Kpop itself, it is a huge part of the convention. It’s a get-together for Kpop fans, sharing their passion along with all other things Korea related. In the dealerroom you could find different stands offering anything from Kpop merchandise to Korean skincare products and a bring & buy.

In the food court, you could find authentic Korean dishes, prepared by Inza’s Seoul Kitchen and Hae Korean food, both serving different kinds of food. From spicy tteokbokki and freshly made kimbap, to mandu and  —— They had it all. Definitely worth a try if you’d like a taste of the Korean cuisine. As for korean drinks, Infinitea was present serving delicious bubble tea.

The talent show was packed and had amazing acts. From dance covers to vocal covers, everyone was able to show their talent. It’s amazing to see how Kpop brings people together and how well even the most difficult choreographies and songs are covered. Of course, everyone was going for that first place of €350, so if you have a talent you’d like to show off, definitely sign up for the next edition of Hallyucon.

After the talent show, they had the second part of the Kpop party and alcohol tasting. Sadly, we couldn’t make it to the last workshop (We’re responsible drivers!) but hopefully we can have another shot at that next time.

Did you know?

That SPKC (Stichting Promotie Koreaanse Cultuur) also organises a Hallyucamp? It doesn’t matter whether you are a new or old Kpop fan, but if you’re looking to meet new people, or just want to have an amazing time with Kpop fans, you should definitely check out everything on Hallyucamp right HERE.

I’d like to thank The Foundation Promotion Korean Culture for giving us the opportunity to be part of this educational and fun convention and Natasja van Knippenberg for her time. Hopefully we’ll have another edition next year, with even more events!
